Sun in My Belly–Atlanta, Georgia
Located in the swanky parts of downtown Decatur. Sun In My Belly has been my favorite brunch place since 2012. My mom just received her Master’s in Business Administration (Whooo hoo!) and opted for a lunch/brunch celebration afterwards. Of course I thought of SIMB for my mom’s graduation brunch.
The ambience is super chill and laid back. It feels partially like a cozy deli and partially like a coffee shop. Good vibes.
Trying to Reserve
This was more challenging that I originally thought. This was the largest group I’d ever taken to SIMB, so I wasn’t sure of how it would go. I was not able to reserve for the amount of people I had, but Eden was very helpful with giving me the information about the wait times, busiest hours on Saturdays, and so forth. We gave it a go…
Arrival and Wait
We arrived around 12:45/1ish and it was a packed house, per usual. Eden was there and took our names. The wait time 45 minutes to 1 hour, which seems like forever when you see all the delicious eats that come out of the kitchen.
My mom had a coffee, and I bought a round of mimosas for 3 (2 of the supporters and myself). The mimosas were pricey to say the least. I’d never gotten a mimosa here, and the price of one at SIMB is almost the price of the bottomless mimosa at other establishments. I digress…
The wait felt like forever, and more of our party came. Finally after a life of waiting, we were sat–outside. It was a HOT day. I mean HOT. Uncomfortably so and sweat, sweat was my friend for that entire experience.
In all fairness, Eden gave us the option on inside or outside, but I think being inside would have been a longer wait and we were starving. Thus, hunger won. Again.
Josh or Chris or some name to that effect (I think it was Josh, I’m unsure). Took the order of the table. I ordered Shrimp and Grits with “The Lucy” (a Kale Salad, more on this later) At the time, there were about 8 of us. We tried to order more drinks, which weren’t as quickly returned as I’d have liked. My mom’s glass was empty and I placed the order when it was half. I expected the second drink to arrive BEFORE she finished her first, but it was a busy day.
Josh/Chris was forgetful and forgot, or did not follow up on the items that never made it to the table. At this time, 3 more of my mom’s friends show to place their orders after we placed ours.
I realize that this was probably taxing to an already forgetful Josh/Chris, but nevertheless they sat. I absolutely hate that, that happened. I would’ve preferably had everyone there at the same time, but the late arrivers had a prior engagement that prevented them from being there on time.
My Shrimp and Grits is described as “shrimp tossed in smoky BBQ sauce, pork sausage, stone-ground cheese grits with a parmesan crouton.” It came out hot, if I remember correctly.
“The Lucy” was okay, but not as flavorful as I expected. It is described as “kale, red apple, thin sliced Spanish onions, toasted pumpkin seeds, avocado, lemon vinaigrette.” I don’t think there was enough acid to balance out the avocado, kale and pumpkin seeds, but the red apple added a sweetness that was both surprising and pleasant.
Overall, I would still considered Sun In My Belly a viable brunch option if you are in the Decatur area and want a little swank with your dining experience.
